Bidalakam is one of the Netra kriyakalpas (eye treatments) in Ayurveda that involves applying a medicated paste around the eyes, excluding the lashes. This treatment is specifically targeted to nourish and rejuvenate the eyes, promoting eye health and improving vision.

Indications of Bidalaka:

Bidalaka is beneficial for various eye-related conditions and can be used as a preventive therapy. It is indicated for:

  • Dry Eyes: Bidalaka helps to lubricate and moisturize the eyes, providing relief from dryness and associated discomfort.
  • Eye Strain: This therapy is effective in reducing eye strain caused by prolonged screen time, reading, or other visually demanding activities.
  • Eye Fatigue: Bidalaka can help alleviate eye fatigue and tiredness due to excessive use or strain.
  • Refractive Errors: It may help in managing refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness).
  • Eye Irritation: Bidalaka can provide soothing relief from eye irritation caused by allergies, pollutants, or environmental factors.

Contraindications of Bidalaka:

Although Bidalaka is generally safe and well-tolerated, there are a few contraindications to consider:

  • Acute Eye Infections: It is not recommended to perform Bidalaka during acute eye infections such as conjunctivitis or keratitis. Wait until the infection subsides before undergoing this therapy.
  • Eye Injuries or Open Wounds: If you have any open wounds or injuries around the eyes, it is best to avoid Bidalaka until they have healed completely.
  • Severe Eye Diseases: Individuals with severe eye diseases such as glaucoma or retinal disorders should consult with an ophthalmologist or Ayurvedic practitioner before undergoing Bidalaka.

Procedure for Bidalaka:

The procedure for Bidalaka involves the following steps:

  • Preparation: Prepare a medicated paste specifically designed for Bidalaka. The paste is usually made from herbal powders mixed with a suitable base, such as Triphala kashaya or rose water.
  • Patient preparation: the patient is asked to lie on his/her back over a droni. Clean the eyes properly, and wipe excess water with a cotton.
  • Application: Apply the medicated paste gently around the eyes, excluding the lashes. The height of lepa is prescribed according to the severity and condition of the disease. Ensure that the paste does not come into contact with the eyes. It is recommended to have someone assist you or seek professional guidance for the correct application.
  • Rest and Relaxation: After applying the paste, rest in a comfortable position while keeping your eyes closed. This allows the herbal ingredients to penetrate and nourish the eye tissues.
  • Duration: The duration of Bidalaka can vary, but it is commonly performed for around 15-30 minutes. The paste is then gently removed using a clean, damp cloth.
  • Follow-up: It is advisable to rest the eyes and avoid exposure to bright lights or screens for some time after the procedure. Follow any additional instructions provided by your Ayurvedic practitioner.

Benefits of Bidalaka:

The benefits of Bidalaka include:

  • Nourishment: The medicated paste used in Bidalaka nourishes and rejuvenates the eye tissues, promoting overall eye health.
  • Moisturization: Bidalaka helps to moisturize the eyes, providing relief from dryness and associated symptoms.
  • Relaxation: The application of the paste and the subsequent rest period can help relax the eyes and reduce eye strain and fatigue.
  • Improved Vision: Regular Bidalaka therapy may help improve visual acuity and manage certain refractive errors.

Do not forget to seek advice from an experienced Ayurvedic doctor before beginning Bidalaka. They can evaluate the condition of your eyes on an individual basis and offer tailored advice and suggestions.
